Should You Be Counting Calories?

In order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you eat.

You've heard this a million times.

Does that mean that you must keep track of every calorie you burn and eat if you want to successfully lose weight?

We would argue that for 95% of the population, including most of you reading this, the answer is no.

You see, this whole calorie counting thing is a lot more complicated than it seems.

If you want to accurately track what you're eating, you have to measure and weigh every single thing you consume on a daily basis. This includes salad dressing, the vegetable oil you used in your stir fry, the cafecito you drank at B-Fit, that bite of the doughnut you took at work, and the glass of wine you had with dinner.

The weight of food changes depending on whether it's raw or cooked, so add that to the mix. You can see how there's a ton of room for error here.

Then there's the issue of time. You're not a bodybuilder who lives to train and eat. You're a busy person who's juggling work, kids/family, and a zillion other responsibilities. In short, when it comes to tracking every single thing you eat, "ain't nobody got time for that."

What to Do Instead

A more sustainable approach to weight loss is making lifestyle changes that compound over time to create a healthier, more fit version of yourself.

Some of these include:

  • Exercising routinely (make it non-negotiable)

  • Cooking most of your meals (catered meals work too)

  • Avoiding liquid calories (water, tea, and coffee only)

  • Cutting down on alcohol (this is HUGE for many people)

  • Sleeping 7-8 hours a night

  • Eating more nutritious foods (veggies, lean protein, fiber)

  • Sticking to a consistent eating schedule

If you implement most of these habits, you will lose weight and become healthier. You don't have to succumb to the tedious process of counting calories, but you do have to have the patience to play the long game.

Easy? Nope.

Worth it? Abso-freaking-lutely.
